Smithers students win Drama Zones
February 8th, 2010 - 3:44pm
Congratulations to Smithers Secondary School for its unprecedented zone accomplishment of winning two consecutive opportunities to represent the northern zone at the High School Provincial Drama Festival taking place in Vancouver this year in May. Eleven zone plays were presented in Kitimat this past weekend and Smithers won six of the eleven awards including best production of Words, Words, Words which provided the school with the honour of presenting this play at Provincials.
Words, Words, Words also won best technical team for lights, sound and staging. Workshops took place most of the day on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday with evening performances attended by students well into Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. It took amazing dedication and commitment from the students, drama teacher, Heather Lytle and technical advisor, Hans Saefkow.
The Chamber of Commerce receives many requests from businesses looking to invest in Smithers and many of the business owners ask about opportunities for their children should they decide to relocate to this area. We’re proud to outline the high level of performing arts instruction available here through the dedication of the staff in music and drama. It provides Smithers with a competitive advantage in attracting business investment to our community.
