Nathan Cullen calls on government to avoid harmful border blockage in Stewart, B.C.

OTTAWA – Nathan Cullen, Member of Parliament for Skeena—Bulkley Valley, is calling on the Harper government to withdraw its decision to close the border crossing between Stewart, British Columbia and Hyder, Alaska between 11PM-7AM beginning April 1st, 2015. After consultations with municipal and business leaders in the area, federal agencies, and US Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Cullen wrote to Canada’s public safety minister, Steven Blaney, demanding that the decision be withdrawn.

“Closing the border will seriously hamper the day-to-day lives of these two communities who, though they reside on two sides of an international border, are very much interlinked and co-dependent,” Cullen wrote. “I strongly encourage you to withdraw the April 1, 2015 implementation date and instruct the CBSA to engage with the communities toward a more sustainable solution.”
