Goodbye to Nelson Leeson; an Extraordinary Leader and Visionary

– Comment from Member of Parliament Nathan Cullen on the passing of Nelson Leeson.
“It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Nelson Leeson, President of the Nisga’a Lisims Government.
He was part of the original core of Nisga’a leaders to negotiate the first formal treaty signed by a First Nation in British Columbia in our time. His dedication to the Nisga’a Nation and belief in unity, not only amongst First Nations but among all of us, played a fundamental role in transforming the political landscape of our province.
His devotion to a just and equitable settlement to the question of Land in our country has never ceased. As co-chair of the Land Claims Agreements Coalition for the past few years, he has worked tirelessly to ensure that all self-government agreements are honoured and achieve their intended objectives.
With his passing Canada has lost a great statesman, determined advocate and ethical mediator. I will miss his wisdom, sense of humour, and ability to motivate the youth. To listen to him speak was inspirational. His place on the Provincial and Federal Landscape will be forever remembered.
I offer my heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends and all those who have come to know and work with him.”
