Cullen welcomes Fairview expansion as economic boost to region and country

MARCH 10, 2015

PRINCE RUPERT - Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen welcomes today’s announcement that the Port of Prince Rupert is expanding into Phase II of the Fairview container port.

“This is exciting news for the community of Prince Rupert, the region, and all of Canada,” Cullen said from Ottawa today. “The container port has consistently increased production since its first year of operation in 2007.

“The Prince Rupert container port has made a name for itself on the world stage with excellent, fast and reliable service and is an extraordinary asset to Canada’s importing, exporting, and shipping industries.

“As a value-added benefit, the port has also really helped to put Prince Rupert and Northwest BC on the map.”

Cullen noted the port expansion will be financed by an investment of over $200 million by Maher Terminals and will increase operating capacity by 60%. Construction will begin immediately, with Phase II being fully operational by the end of 2017.

“This expansion and investment will help to bring jobs and stability to Prince Rupert and beyond,” Cullen said. “With the welcome increase in industrial activity, I am optimistic about the economic growth prospects for Prince Rupert in the coming years.”
