Cullen welcomes another airport funding announcement

TERRACE - Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen welcomed yesterday’s announcement that the Northwest Regional Airport will receive a second grant of $250,000 from the Northern Development Initiative Trust to assist with airport expansion.
“The Northwest’s booming industrial activity and increased tourism traffic mean many of our airports must undertake expensive upgrades and expansions that rely on government funding assistance,” Cullen said.
“Public money is tight and that our airports have been able to acquire as many grants as they have is a real tribute to airport managers and municipal leaders working on these funding projects.”

The Terrace Kitimat airport funding announced Wednesday is earmarked for terminal expansion and follows a $250,000 NDI grant announced several months ago to upgrade the facility’s aircraft parking area.

Area airports have also received an infusion of funding from Transport Canada's Airports Capital Assistance Program in recent months.  In July, the Terrace Kitimat Airport was awarded $3.7 million over two years for airfield electrical upgrades and the Prince Rupert Airport $10.3 million over two years for runway, apron and airport buildings work.

In August, the Smithers Airport received two federal transportation grants totalling close to $500,000 for runway equipment purchase, on top of a $255,000 capital assistance grant announced in March for new snow-clearing equipment.

“Vibrant airports are vital to ongoing community economic development and job creation,” Cullen said.  “I’m proud to work alongside municipal and airport authorities to help secure federal funding for these important transportation investments.”
