OTTAWA – The extension of a $255,200 grant to the Town of Smithers for airport infrastructure upgrades is a welcome announcement, said Skeena—Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen. The funds – allocated under the Airports Capital Assistance Program – will be used to replace the existing front end loader and ramp plow, which are crucial pieces of equipment for the airport in the often-snowy Bulkley Valley.
Cullen urged federal transport minister Lisa Raitt to approve the funding in December and again in February, and thanked Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson for his efforts in assisting the town as well. “It’s important to have these efforts at all three levels – federal, provincial and municipal – to show the importance of the funding to the community, and I’m hopeful we can expect more funding under this program in the future for other badly need upgrades at the Smithers airport,” said Cullen.
Cullen noted the strategic importance of the airport to the growing resource sector in the Northwest, as well as the necessity of the upgrades to maintain the airport as a safe and efficient facility. “Our region makes significant economic contributions to federal tax coffers through resource development. For the government, investing in our airport is a win-win, and the Town of Smithers deserves major credit for spearheading this determined effort.”
